kdoubs' recommendation.

I am having a hard time putting this one down. It is, as Kev said, most certainly f*cked.

I'm closing in on 70% and it's costing me sleep.

Spoiler:
It also cost me some time at work, but it's done now.

Man, what a good book.

Love-love the idea of the catalogs.
I thought the Father turn in the last 10% was great.
The bit where she went back and re-lived the memories of the Adoption Day? Chilling.
All of the David stuff was fuuuuucking brutal.

Man, so good. Thanks for the recommendation, Kev.

Yes! It's so messed up, but somehow all makes sense. This is one of the rare times that a novel is actually unique without going the esoteric route.

Spoiler:
The author is a master at world building. One part that really sticks in my mind is the girl who has to kill babies so that their spirits follow her around and whisper to her and basically become her personal prophets. So f*cked.

Spoiler:
And the bull! What a horrible, horrible thing.
And the dogs as sentries?
And the way the lions were used?
All so unexpected.

Spoiler:
The twist where the Father reveals that he's done this countless times before with Carolyn as the villain was nuts. That she's been in the bull but never broke, yeesh. So many cool themes to this book.

Damn, that was a great book.

Spoiler:
I don't know that I need the adventures of Carolyn and Erwin as a sequel, but Scott Hawkins has already earned my dollars for whatever he writes next.

Same. Just watch: he's about to become the darling of the Nerdset and will still be working on book 2 of his trilogy in 2025.

Yeah when I read a really good book my review upon recommendation gets shorter and shorter, because I don't want to give anything away. The "just trust me" is a great encapsulation. I'm also hesitant to recommend books because the ones I read and really love are really f*cking weird. And if you don't like one of my recommendations my impression of you is forever and inextricably linked to this fact.
