World cup without a certain red white and blue team in the mix (super bummed about that bTW) drops this event from one of my favorite events to look forward to , all the way down to I absolutely do not care. I will watch zero minutes without the USA. So lame that they are out of it. really really sucks.

I'm not sure yet. Obviously it's a lot less interesting, but I could get into it if some underdog makes a run or just in individual matches with teams like Iceland. I dunno, we'll see.

Was thinking stupid things about Messi not being able to do this or that, then I read this:

https://www.sbnation.com/soccer/2018/6/ ... vs-croatia

I shouldn't be allowed to have opinions. :aints:

BTW - I absolutely LOVE Messi. He's a freaking wizard. Way better than Cristiano. He's just not on teams that rise to the occasion very often, which can cloud the thoughts of people who don't know what they're talking about.

Yeah - it seems wrong to root against Iceland. If there was a way for them and Argentina/Messi to move on, I'd be for that, but there isn't, so I'm torn. I want more Messi and more Iceland.

I guess I'll hope Iceland moves on since Argentina will just lose in the knockout round anyway. They're playing Nigeria RIGHT NOW!

So far Mexico, England, and Portugal are the teams I'm favoring. Mexico v Germany was fabulous. If they could have finished better it would have been 4-0. I think that speaks more to Germany's bad tactics and stubbornness, but Mexico took advantage from minute 1.

England and Portugal actually have an outside shot at the whole thing (Mexico, not so much), so that's cool. :-)

Also, when I was watching Iceland earlier in the week, I saw that every single player on the starting 11 had a name that ended in -son. Looking at the full squad, only the backup GK doesn't fit that. I wonder if they make fun of him.

It's an Icelandic naming thing. The GK may not be traditional/Icelandic.

Every Icelander's last name comes from their father's first name name and either "-son" or "-dottir" as a suffix. I would be Ethan Petersson. My daughters would be Amelia Ethansdottir and Daphne Ethansdottir. Relatives do not share a last name. It makes for some interesting cultural challenges.

BTW, look at this video. Iceland is beautiful. As are Icelanders.

Also - backup GK is Danish-born. Icelandic mom. Definitely gets made fun of. ;-)

Reminds me of an article I read about how they have nearly eliminated Down syndrome there, though maybe not in the way you think.

Actually, that's pretty much the way I would think it would get done.

Very tough issue. I always had my fingers crossed when we were involved in pre-natal tests that we wouldn't have to make any hard decisions. The quote at the end, ending in "Life is grey." Yup. I usually don't pre-determine my views on what I would do in a situation like that. It's not that I'm without convictions or principles, but I think you have to actually walk in those shoes sometimes to make a determination.

Nice, breezy Friday afternoon article there Kev. ;-)
