Caught this with my youngest. She's deeeeeep into all of it and she was geeked to get it on.

Spoiler:
It was pretty good. Middle-of-the-pack Marvel movie for me. On par with Dr. Strange, maybe?

Highlights:
  • Stella was *geeking* when Colson showed up
  • 90's-era cop cars were funny.
  • Skrull shape-shifting effects were neat.
  • Solid use of 90's jams in the soundtrack.
  • Great mid-credits scene. Good post-credits scene.
  • Fun to see Jude law and Annette Bening

Lowlights:
  • It was too long, for sure. That's been standard for all of the Marvel movies, IMO. I get it with the Avengers jams, because there are so many threads that need to get touched on. I didn't think Capt. Marvel needed to be 2 hours long.
  • I don't know anything about the Kree/Skrull war so I'm not sure if the "refugee/terrorist" framing of the sides was a nod to modern politics or not. It wasn't subtle.
  • Still some CGI blob punching, but not as bad as in the DC movies.

Spoiler:
I agree with most of this.

Allison didn't go to this. I liked it, the 14yo liked it and the 12yo *loved* it. I think it's the most fun she's had in a movie in a while. She's really getting into comics, especially the female ones.

I'd say it was a solid-B. I liked it better than Dr. Strange. I got bored in that movie, but not in this one. I thought the length was okay.

I know a little about the Kree-Skrull war, not a lot. The Skrulls are always bad dudes AFAIK, so the turn of making them sympathetic was surprising and almost unwelcome.

I teared up at the new Marvel Studios card at the front. People cheered. They also cheered at his cameo.

Speaking of, this is awesome:

with you on the Marvel card at the beginning

How full was your theater? We were 1pm on Saturday and I'd say it was 70% full. And we go to the old, non-stadium theater.

About the same, maybe 80% packed. 7:30pm Friday at Regal Short Pump. 2D Imax. I don't give a sh*t about Imax, but I will pay extra every time for reserve seating. We sat down at 7:29pm and had (IMO) the best seats in the house.

I saw this.

Spoiler:
It was ... good. I agree with the criticism of the length. I feel like they could have added some more interesting story beats. This ended up feeling like something they rushed out to get it on the screen before Endgame. Brie Larson was fun to watch, a lot of playful emotion from her even though she was saving an entire planet and race, but I guess that's par for the course now with Marvel? I enjoyed it but it felt like a lot of fluff. Part of the issue may have been that it was all leading up to that montage of her getting up after she had fallen, which was powerful, but I already got chills from that in the trailer. Would have been nice to save that for the movie.

Top 50% for me in the Marvel Universe.
